This year Victorian schools will be receiving needs-based Gonski directly for the first time and we will begin to see these extra resources making a difference for students.
This is great news and will help us step up our campaign for the full six years of Gonski funding.
The Australian Education Union’s Victorian branch has today launched an advertisement reminding parents that the Turnbull Government has broken its promise by walking away from the final two years of Gonski funding.
Funding for Victorian public schools is the lowest per student in Australia and Gonski is needed urgently to close the gaps in resources.
The public is behind the push for full Gonski – with new polling in marginal electorates showing voters support full Gonski funding by a margin of 2-to-1.
In Victoria, where voters in the electorates of La Trobe, Corangamite, Dunkley and Deakin were polled 52.6% of voters supported Gonski, while only 20.3% opposed it. There was even a majority among Coalition voters, despite Malcolm Turnbull’s opposition, with 39.7% supporting it, compared with 29.1% opposing.
Gonski getting results – but six years needed
In States where the Gonski funding is already going directly to schools, such as NSW, QLD and SA, schools are seeing great results following investment in literacy and numeracy programs, smaller class sizes, more support staff and professional development for teachers.
NSW and SA have promised to fund the full six years of Gonski, regardless of what the Federal Government does - something Victoria’s Andrews Government is yet to do.
The Turnbull Government has announced it will not match Federal Labor’s commitment to fund the last two years of the Gonski agreements.
However this should not be an excuse for any State or Territory government to do the same. We need all State and Territory Governments to do their bit to properly resource their schools by funding the full six years of Gonski.
Our kids are too important for anything less.
Gonski funding will benefit all Victorian schools in 2016, but the greatest amounts of funding will flow to the schools with the most disadvantaged students.

Tell Turnbull Gonski matters
We need both State and Federal Governments to commit to the full six years of Gonski to deliver disadvantaged Victorian schools the resources they need.
It’s now up to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to decide whether he will back Gonski in full and offer bi-partisan support for proper funding for all Australian schools.
He can no longer simply continue Tony Abbott’s policy of saying No to Gonski.
We need you to make your voice heard. Please sign our petition to tell Malcolm Turnbull to stop the cuts to schools and give them the full six years of needs-based Gonski funding.
